Madeira is taking significant steps to bolster its emergency services by launching a training course for instructors of cadet and junior firefighters. This initiative, set to commence in May, is part of a broader strategy to enhance volunteer firefighter recruitment across the region.
Currently, there are two cadet schools operating in Madeira, located in Santana and Câmara de Lobos, involving approximately 70 children. The President of the Regional Civil Protection Service, Richard Marques, announced the plans to expand these programs to include more fire departments. He emphasized that these schools serve as a vital source of volunteer recruitment.
The training courses aim to equip future instructors with the necessary skills to foster a new generation of volunteer firefighters. This initiative is crucial as it addresses the growing need for adequately trained emergency responders in Madeira, a region known for its challenging terrain and tourist influx.
Richard Marques highlighted the importance of these programs in instilling a sense of civic duty and preparedness in young participants, ensuring that Madeira can effectively manage emergencies and natural disasters.
