According to preliminary data from the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira, there was a noticeable increase in the number of licensed and completed buildings, as well as a shift in vehicle movements through the island's ports.
Rise in Building Permits and Completions
In 2025, the municipal councils of the Autonomous Region of Madeira granted licenses for 561 buildings, marking a 2.2% increase from the previous year, which saw 549 licensed buildings. Furthermore, construction companies completed 392 buildings, up by 3.2% compared to 380 in 2024. These developments are part of Madeira's ongoing efforts to enhance its urban landscape and provide more housing options for its residents.
The data indicates that 76.6% of the licensed construction and demolition works were new constructions, with a significant 91.6% dedicated to family housing. This surge in residential construction is indicative of the growing demand for housing on the island, driven by both local population needs and tourism-related investments.
Vehicle Movements at Madeira's Ports
The ports of Caniçal and Porto Santo reported a total movement of 14,600 vehicles in 2025. This included 11,553 vehicles entering and 3,047 vehicles leaving the region. Notably, there was a reduction of 352 vehicles entering and an increase of 683 vehicles exiting compared to 2024. These changes reflect a dynamic shift in the transportation patterns on the island, possibly influenced by changes in local demand and tourism activities.
José Manuel Rodrigues, the regional secretary of Economy, highlighted these shifts during a press conference, emphasizing the importance of adapting to the changing transportation needs of Madeira.
