The XXXIV Festival Regional de Teatro Escolar Carlos Varela returns to Madeira, bringing young actors to the stage in a vibrant celebration of youth theatre from 9 to 13 March.

The Madeira School Theatre Festival, now in its 34th edition, is set to take place at Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz from March 9 to 13. This vibrant event, named after the renowned theatre figure Carlos Varela, gathers young actors from various schools across the Autonomous Region of Madeira to showcase their talent and creativity.

The festival features nine theatrical performances, with six plays entering a friendly competition and three presented by guest groups. Notable among the guest performers is the Associação Palco Vazio, which will present 'Metamorphosis,' inspired by Franz Kafka's work, and the Associação de Desenvolvimento Comunitário do Funchal with their piece 'Manual de Instruções para a Vida (que ninguém leu).' The Conservatório-Escola Profissional das Artes da Madeira will also participate with 'Três Tristes Turmas.'

The festival promises a rich array of performances, kicking off on March 10 at 3:00 PM with 'O Último Comboio,' brought to life by the Voo à Fantasia group from EBS Padre Manuel Álvares. On March 11, the Escola Secundária de Jaime Moniz will present 'Olivia' by Mariana Jones. March 12 features a diverse lineup, including 'Lá, onde nos…' by the Oficina de Teatro Corpus from Escola Secundária Francisco Franco and 'Maré Alta' by the Grupo de Teatro Amarelo from Escola Básica e Secundária da Ponta do Sol.

The festival will culminate on March 13 with 'A Barbearia,' an adaptation by Miguel Silva, performed by the Clube de Teatro da Escola Dr. Francisco Freitas Branco, Porto Santo. This closing act embodies the festival's spirit of creativity and collaboration among young artists.

The XXXIV Festival Regional de Teatro Escolar Carlos Varela not only provides a platform for young actors to express themselves but also fosters cultural exchange and learning through theatre. It is a celebration of youth, creativity, and the performing arts, making it a significant event for both locals and visitors to Madeira.
