Madeira's Iconic Fortress Awaits Revival: A Call for Action

In a bold move, the Liberal Initiative (IL) has called upon the Regional Government of Madeira to take decisive action in restoring and revitalizing the historic Forte de São João Baptista in Machico. This comes after the recent termination of the concession contract, which had left the fortress neglected for years.

The IL argues that this moment should mark a departure from years of inaction and serve as an opportunity to reintegrate the fortress into the community, not only as a preserved historical site but as a vibrant cultural and educational center.

Central to the IL's vision is the transformation of the fortress into a Center for the Interpretation of Fachos or an exhibition space dedicated to the Discoveries under the theme 'Machico Terra Primeira'. This approach combines physical restoration with cultural dynamism, ensuring that the site is both a tourist attraction and a bastion of local heritage.

António Nóbrega, a prominent member of IL, emphasizes the need for immediate action, stating, "This must be the time to finally accomplish what has been delayed for years. Machico cannot be left waiting any longer."

The Forte de São João Baptista holds significant historical value, having once served as a defense against pirate attacks. The proposed interpretative center would celebrate this history while promoting the local tradition of Fachos, a unique cultural element with potential international recognition.
