Madeira emerges as a potential strategic platform linking China and Europe, capitalizing on economic confidence and cooperation opportunities with Macau.

Madeira is setting its sights on becoming a pivotal platform connecting China and Europe, as highlighted by José Manuel Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary of Economy. This initiative comes amid the Business Mission to China and Macau, orchestrated by Invest Madeira.

Rodrigues underscored the robust economic confidence surrounding Madeira and the promising cooperative ventures with Macau. His remarks followed key meetings with the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), led by Elaine Wong, and the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, headed by Ji Xianzheng.

The mission includes prominent figures such as Ana Filipa Ferreira, Executive Director of Invest Madeira, António Martins da Cruz, a consultant and former ambassador, and José de Sousa Câmara, Vice-Rector of the University of Madeira. Their presence signals the strategic importance placed on this initiative by the Madeira government.

In his address, Rodrigues emphasized China’s significant role as an economic partner for Portugal, noting that it is the leading supplier outside Europe, with Portuguese imports from China surpassing those from the United States fivefold. This context of economic interdependence enhances Madeira's ambition to serve as a bridge for trade and investment.

By focusing on areas ripe for growth, such as technology and high-tech industries, Madeira aims to attract substantial investments from Asia. This strategy not only boosts the regional economy but also reinforces Madeira's global standing as a competitive business hub.
