Madeira has ramped up its fire prevention and control measures for rural areas with the implementation of the BRAVO level of the Special Device for Combating Rural Fires (DECIR) 2026, ensuring enhanced safety and coordination.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira has taken significant steps to bolster its fire prevention and control measures for rural areas. As of June 1, 2026, the BRAVO level of the Special Device for Combating Rural Fires (DECIR) 2026 has been activated. This initiative will remain in effect until November 30, 2026, providing a robust framework to protect the region from potential fire hazards.

The DECIR 2026 plan involves a permanent and dedicated operational structure. This includes coordinated efforts among the region's fire brigades, armed forces, security services, forestry authorities, and municipal civil protection bodies. The initiative is part of a €1.6 million investment by the Regional Government of Madeira, reinforcing the Integrated System of Protection and Relief Operations (SIOPS) across Madeira and Porto Santo islands.

A crucial component of this plan is the activation of the Information Maintenance and Exploration Team (EMEIF) at the Regional Command for Relief Operations (CROS). This team is responsible for continuous monitoring and coordination between various entities such as the firefighters, the army, the Republican National Guard (GNR), the Forestry and Nature Conservation Institute (IFCN), and the Public Security Police (PSP).

The launch of the BRAVO level saw the active involvement of Micaela Fonseca de Freitas, the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection. She emphasized the preparedness and responsiveness of the integrated device, highlighting the motivation and commitment of the forces involved in this regional endeavor.

This initiative is particularly important given Madeira's susceptibility to rural fires, which can pose significant threats to both local residents and the tourism industry. The enhanced measures not only aim to prevent fires but also to ensure swift and effective responses should any incidents occur.
