The Regional Government of Madeira has introduced a strategic support package aimed at alleviating the effects of the current energy crisis, with a focus on sustaining businesses, employment, and family purchasing power.

In response to the escalating energy crisis exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in Iran, the Regional Government of Madeira unveiled a comprehensive support package on April 1, 2026. The initiative aims to safeguard the economic stability of the island by targeting sectors most impacted by soaring energy costs.

José Manuel Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary of Economy, announced that the measures will be effective for three months and are designed to protect businesses' competitiveness, secure jobs, and maintain the purchasing power of households. The package addresses the adverse effects caused by the dramatic rise in fuel prices.

Key Components of the Support Package

  • €400,000 allocated to public transportation services to ensure continued operations.
  • €110,000 directed towards the taxi industry, providing an additional €135 per vehicle—€15 more than the mainland support.
  • Increased gas subsidy from €20 to €25 per cylinder, benefiting approximately 3,300 families under the 'Solidarity Gas' program.
  • Financial support for Firefighter Associations, offering €360 per heavy vehicle and €120 per light vehicle, covering 137 vehicles.
  • Subsidies of up to €600 for each Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS).
  • A fuel subsidy of €0.10 per liter for dyed diesel used in the fishing industry.

Furthermore, the regional government has committed to maintaining a fuel price differential of €0.10 compared to mainland Portugal, starting next Monday, as emphasized by Rodrigues.

This initiative reflects Madeira's proactive approach to cushioning the local economy and its residents from the global energy crisis's ripple effects, ensuring resilience and sustainability in challenging times.
