Machico's Council Rejects JPP's Public Space Improvement Proposals
Madeira GuideThe Municipal Assembly of Machico has turned down JPP's recommendations aimed at enhancing public spaces, including parking reorganization and shoreline access maintenance.
In a recent meeting held on February 25, 2026, the Municipal Assembly of Machico made a decisive move by rejecting a series of proposals put forward by the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party. These proposals were focused on improving various public spaces across the Machico municipality, an area located on the eastern part of Madeira Island, known for its scenic beauty and tourist attractions.
The JPP's recommendations emphasized the need for initiatives deemed crucial for the residents' quality of life. Among these were the repainting and reorganization of parking spaces around key community hubs such as the Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico, the local swimming pool, and the municipal football field.
Furthermore, the JPP highlighted the importance of regular maintenance of the coastal access points, which are vital for activities like diving and surfing that attract both tourists and locals. Specific locations mentioned included the Machico pier and the Pedradeira quay.
The proposals also called for the cleaning and improved upkeep of roads and sidewalks, citing issues like frequent landslides that disrupt daily life and emergency access in areas such as Caminho do Arrebentão and Caminho do Ribeiro Escuro.
Additionally, the JPP suggested the repurposing of an old school in Porto da Cruz into a multi-purpose space for cultural activities, benefiting local associations and the broader community.
Despite the rejection, the JPP argues that current government claims about ongoing maintenance do not align with on-the-ground realities. The party insists that significant issues persist, such as deteriorating road surfaces and irregular pavements, which impact the daily lives of residents and the visitor experience.
