Machico Rejects JPP's Public Space Improvement Proposals
Madeira GuideThe Municipal Assembly of Machico has rejected proposals from Juntos Pelo Povo aimed at enhancing public spaces. The decision affects key areas like parking and coastal access vital for both locals and tourists.
In a recent meeting held on February 25, the Municipal Assembly of Machico decided against a series of recommendations proposed by the political group Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP). These proposals were focused on improving various public spaces within the municipality, which are considered crucial for the quality of life of its residents.
The JPP's recommendations included the repainting and reorganization of parking markings around key community areas such as the Escola Básica e Secundária de Machico, the local swimming pool, and the municipal football field. Additionally, they proposed regular maintenance of coastal access points widely used by schools, tourists, and local inhabitants, including Machico's pier and the Pedradeira quay.
Another significant aspect of the proposals was the cleaning and maintenance of sidewalks, gutters, and road pavements, particularly in areas prone to landslides like Caminho do Arrebentão and Caminho do Ribeiro Escuro. Furthermore, the JPP suggested the requalification of the old school in Porto da Cruz into a multipurpose space to support cultural activities.
Despite the perceived necessity of these improvements, the Assembly rejected the proposals, citing ongoing works. However, JPP representatives argue that, four months into the current administration, these efforts have not been consistently or adequately implemented. They highlighted the continued deterioration of roads and public infrastructure, which remain a concern for residents.
This decision has sparked discussions among locals and tourists alike, as these public spaces are integral to daily life and the tourist experience in Machico, a region known for its scenic beauty and cultural heritage.
