JPP Advocates for Territorial Equality in Returnee Programs
Madeira GuideThe JPP is urging for equal territorial application of the national Program Regressar, aimed at encouraging emigrants to return to Madeira. This initiative is crucial for ensuring that all Madeirans, including those living abroad, benefit equally.
In a recent legislative session, the Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) party raised a call for fair territorial application of the national incentive program designed to encourage emigrants to return to Madeira. The program, known as Programa Regressar, aims to facilitate the reintegration of Madeiran expatriates and their descendants.
Mariusky Spínola, a representative of the JPP, presented a resolution underscoring the necessity for equality in implementing this program and its successors. According to Spínola, the autonomy of Madeira can only be deemed complete when it encompasses all Madeirans, including those who have emigrated.
With an estimated 1.5 million Madeirans and their descendants living across the globe, the call for equal treatment in the Program Regressar is seen as a vital step toward strengthening ties with the diaspora. This move is expected to aid in addressing the demographic and economic challenges faced by the island by potentially increasing the local workforce and rejuvenating the cultural ties among Madeirans.
The JPP's initiative highlights the need to ensure that returning Madeirans receive the same opportunities and support as those who remained on the island. This includes access to housing, employment opportunities, and other social services that are crucial for successful reintegration.
Madeira's unique cultural and geographical context, characterized by its autonomy and strong historical ties with its diaspora, makes this program particularly significant. The JPP emphasizes that achieving territorial equality is not only a matter of fairness but also a strategic necessity to harness the potential contributions of its global citizens.
