JPP Accuses PSD/CDS of Political Persecution in Santa Cruz
Madeira GuideJPP has accused the PSD/CDS coalition of political persecution in Santa Cruz, alleging attempts to divert attention from environmental issues.
The political landscape in Madeira has recently been stirred by allegations from the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party against the ruling PSD/CDS coalition. The JPP claims that the coalition is engaging in political persecution against the municipality of Santa Cruz. This accusation was made public on Tuesday during a press conference.
According to Rafael Nunes, a JPP deputy, the PSD/CDS coalition is using its majority to stifle opposition efforts to address serious environmental issues in areas under its control. This was exemplified during a meeting of the Commission on Environment, Climate, and Natural Resources, where the PSD rejected all opposition requests for parliamentary hearings on environmental matters, approving only its proposal to summon the Mayor of Santa Cruz regarding wastewater discharges at the Caniço wastewater treatment plant.
The wastewater treatment plant in question, built by the PSD in the 1990s, is located in Caniço, a parish in Santa Cruz. JPP alleges that the PSD/CDS majority is using this issue as a political tool rather than addressing the broader environmental concerns facing Madeira.
Rafael Nunes highlighted the discrepancies in water quality reports from different regions. He pointed out that while the waters at Praia dos Reis Magos in Caniço are rated as 'excellent', other areas under PSD governance, such as Praia do Vigário and Doca do Cavacas, have only 'acceptable' or 'poor' water quality ratings, respectively.
These issues deserve serious and impartial discussion in the Commission on Environment, with the participation of the regional environment director and the mayors. However, this has not happened because the PSD rejected all hearings involving mayors elected by their own party.
The JPP argues that the PSD's reluctance to engage in meaningful environmental discussions stems from a desire to undermine Santa Cruz's successes. Santa Cruz, a vibrant municipality known for its proactive governance and environmental initiatives, stands as a model that starkly contrasts with other PSD-led regions.
