The youth wing of CDS-PP Madeira emphasizes the need for enhanced mental health funding and prevention strategies, especially for young people, following a visit to AFARAM.

In a recent development that underscores the growing focus on mental health in Madeira, JP Madeira, the youth wing of CDS-PP, has called for increased funding and improved prevention strategies for mental health, particularly targeting the youth. This call to action was articulated during a visit to AFARAM, the Association of Families and Friends of Mental Health Patients in the Madeira Autonomous Region, as part of the 'Mental Health Journeys – A Generation That Listens' initiative.

AFARAM, which has been operational for 22 years, highlighted the importance of community and residential support for individuals with long-term mental health conditions. During their meeting with JP Madeira, AFARAM representatives emphasized the need for better financing to enhance these services and support young individuals at risk.

The youth wing's proposals also include valuing 'autonomization houses', which are transitional homes designed to help individuals with mental health challenges gain independence. These facilities play a critical role in the recovery and reintegration process, offering support in a semi-independent living arrangement.

This initiative comes at a time when mental health issues are increasingly being recognized as a priority, not only in Madeira but globally. The focus on young people is particularly pertinent, given that early intervention can significantly alter the trajectory of mental health outcomes.

JP Madeira's advocacy reflects a broader trend of political and social organizations in Madeira prioritizing mental health, with a particular focus on preventative measures and community-based solutions.
