The city of Funchal, a picturesque and popular destination on Madeira Island, has experienced a series of incidents this May that have caused concern among residents and visitors. Notably, a homeless individual inadvertently set a fire in an abandoned house, and two separate motorcycle accidents required emergency response.
Fire in Abandoned House
On the evening of May 18, 2026, the Funchal Fire Brigade responded to a fire in an abandoned house located on Calçada de Santa Clara. The fire was accidentally started by a homeless person who had taken refuge in the building. Ten firefighters and three fire engines were dispatched to the scene to control and extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but the incident highlights ongoing challenges around homelessness in the area.
Motorcycle Accidents Raise Safety Concerns
Earlier in the month, on May 17, two separate motorcycle accidents occurred, prompting swift action from local emergency services. The first incident involved a man in his 30s who crashed his motorcycle on Rua do Brasil in the Bairro da Nazaré. He sustained a suspected leg fracture and was promptly transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for treatment.
The second accident involved a 49-year-old woman who lost control of her motorcycle in a tunnel near the fire station. She was rendered unconscious and suffered a suspected finger fracture along with knee abrasions. She was also taken to the same hospital after regaining consciousness.
Community and Tourist Safety
These incidents have sparked discussions about safety measures in Funchal, especially as the city sees a surge in tourists during the spring and summer months. Authorities are urged to address issues related to road safety and support for vulnerable populations to ensure the well-being of both residents and visitors.
