The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the Port Authority of Funchal have issued weather warnings for Madeira, predicting snowfall in the mountains and strong winds with rough seas.

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for snowfall in the mountainous regions of Madeira. This unusual weather event is expected to occur from 9 AM on March 18th to 9 AM on March 19th. Snowfall is predicted above 1,500 meters, with accumulations reaching up to 10 centimeters.

Concurrently, the Port Authority of Funchal has issued a signal 6 weather warning due to expected rough seas and strong winds. The wind is forecasted to start from the west-southwest, increasing in intensity from gentle to moderate speeds of 18 to 29 km/h, and later escalating to fresh to strong winds ranging from 38 to 61 km/h during the night.

These weather conditions could potentially disrupt daily activities, particularly in the higher altitudes and coastal areas. Residents and tourists are advised to exercise caution, especially when traveling to or from elevated regions or engaging in maritime activities.

Madeira, known for its mild climate and lush landscapes, rarely experiences such wintry conditions. The local authorities are on high alert to ensure safety and minimize any impacts of these weather changes.

The combination of snowfall and strong winds is expected to create challenging conditions for both residents and visitors. Ensuring preparedness and staying informed through local news and official advisories is crucial during this period.
