Emanuel Câmara, a PS-Madeira deputy, has urged the Portuguese government to address urgent issues with the Mobility Subsidy, affecting Madeira and Porto Santo residents.

Emanuel Câmara, a deputy from the Socialist Party (PS) elected to the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal representing the Madeira constituency, has made an urgent plea to the government regarding the Mobility Subsidy. His call for action was directed towards the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, during a recent committee meeting.

The Mobility Subsidy, crucial for residents of Madeira and Porto Santo, has been a contentious issue due to recent changes introduced by the national government. Câmara criticized these amendments, describing them as "an affront to both the intelligence and finances of island residents."

Key Issues Highlighted

Câmara pointed out several problematic aspects of the current subsidy model. He strongly opposed the requirement for residents to declare no debts to the state as a condition for receiving the subsidy. Additionally, he criticized the cap of 200 euros per journey and the cumbersome electronic platform used for subsidy applications, which he argued complicates the process unnecessarily.

  • 200 euros journey cap
  • Complicated electronic application platform

Câmara emphasized the historical context, noting that the current government, like a previous administration, is seen as reducing the rights of Madeira and Porto Santo residents. He urged the minister to refrain from anti-autonomist policies, advocating instead for fair treatment of the island communities.

"I don't ask you to be autonomist, just not anti-autonomist," Câmara stated in his appeal.

Unified Political Stance

Câmara highlighted the bipartisan support for his stance, noting that deputies from Madeira and the Azores, regardless of political affiliation, share his views on the necessity of revising the Mobility Subsidy. This unified front underscores the widespread discontent with the current system among the island residents.
