Two Tourists Rescued on Madeira Island Trails
Madeira GuideTwo tourists were rescued yesterday on separate trails in Madeira Island after facing difficulties. A young tourist got lost, and an older tourist became unwell, highlighting the challenges of the island's hiking paths.
Madeira Island, known for its breathtaking landscapes and challenging hiking trails, witnessed two separate rescue operations yesterday involving tourists in distress. The incidents underscore the importance of preparedness and caution while exploring the island's natural beauty.
Young Tourist Lost on Vereda dos Balcões
The first incident occurred on the Vereda dos Balcões, a popular hiking trail in Ribeiro Frio. A 21-year-old tourist lost his way after taking an alternative path. Fortunately, the alert was raised quickly, and four members of the Santana Volunteer Firefighters responded promptly. They located the young man approximately two hours after the initial call. Thankfully, he was found unharmed.
Older Tourist Falls Ill on Vereda da Eira do Serrado
In a separate incident, a 65-year-old German tourist encountered difficulties while hiking the Vereda da Eira do Serrado. She fell ill mid-way through the trail and was unable to continue. Six firefighters from Câmara de Lobos were dispatched, and the rescue operation took about three hours to complete. The tourist was then taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for medical evaluation.
These rescues highlight the potential risks associated with hiking in Madeira, especially for those unfamiliar with the terrain. Tourists are advised to prepare adequately, stay on marked trails, and inform someone of their plans before embarking on hikes.
