The scheduled strike at Madeira's Abattoir Center has been called off following successful negotiations between the government and workers' representatives.

The strike that was scheduled to take place at the Centro de Abate da Região Autónoma da Madeira (CARAM) from March 16th to March 30th has been canceled. The decision came after successful negotiations between the Sindicato dos Trabalhadores em Funções Públicas e Sociais do Sul e Regiões Autónomas (STFPSSRA) and the administration of CARAM.

Originally, the strike was planned due to the failure to initiate negotiations for the revision of the company's agreement, as promised by CARAM's administration in December 2025. Workers and their representatives had not received any communication about the negotiations, prompting them to plan the strike.

On March 11th, a meeting was held at the Direção Regional do Trabalho, where it was agreed that a protocol of negotiation would lead to the cancellation of the strike. The protocol was signed on March 13th, and the first negotiation meeting is scheduled for March 19th at CARAM's premises.

This development is significant for both CARAM employees and the regional government, as it demonstrates a commitment to dialogue and resolution through negotiation. Tourists and locals alike can expect continued operations at the abattoir without disruption.

For those unfamiliar with Madeira, CARAM is a critical facility in the region, ensuring the supply of fresh meat products. The resolution of this labor dispute is thus vital for maintaining the local food supply chain.
