Santa Cruz, a prominent municipality in Madeira, has announced a significant investment aimed at upgrading its wastewater management infrastructure. The local government plans to allocate €2 million towards the rehabilitation of the Caniço Wastewater Treatment Plant (ETAR), a critical facility for environmental sustainability and public health.
This investment is part of a broader strategy to enhance water management systems across the region. Alongside the improvements to the ETAR of Caniço, the municipality is also tackling water loss issues, with a projected investment of €1.8 million dedicated to the water subsystems in Igreja, Camacha, and Barreiros, Caniço.
Élia Ascensão, during the municipal ceremony of raising the Eco-Schools Flags at the Escola Básica do 1.º Ciclo com Pré-Escolar, emphasized the importance of these projects in supporting sustainable development goals and ensuring efficient water resource management.
The focus on infrastructure not only supports environmental efforts but also caters to the growing needs of the island's population and its tourism industry. The rehabilitation of the ETAR is expected to improve the quality of wastewater treatment, thereby protecting the island’s unique ecosystems and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
The announcement coincides with World Water Day, celebrated globally to raise awareness about the importance of water conservation and sustainable management, highlighting the municipality's commitment to these global initiatives.
