In a heartfelt ceremony, two late artisans from Porto Santo were posthumously honored for their craftsmanship in Cana Vieira, while future events promise to celebrate other local talents.

In a touching tribute to the traditional arts of Madeira, two late artisans from Porto Santo, João Melim and José Andrade “Ramos”, were posthumously honored for their exceptional skills in working with Cana Vieira. The ceremony took place as part of the Artisan Week, an initiative by the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicraft Institute (IVBAM), aimed at celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The event, presided over by Nuno Maciel, the regional secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, highlighted the significance of preserving and promoting the island’s unique artisanal skills. Maciel emphasized the importance of recognizing the hard work and creativity of these artisans, which contributes significantly to the cultural fabric of Madeira.

Scheduled to be honored subsequently are Maria Otília Melim and Maria Amélia Melim, renowned for their work with Palmito. However, adverse weather conditions prevented their participation in the current ceremony. Their contributions will be acknowledged in a future event.

The Artisan Week serves not only as a celebration but also as an educational platform where visitors can engage with artisans through live demonstrations, workshops, and an open market. The event, which concludes tomorrow, offers a unique opportunity for both locals and tourists to immerse themselves in the vibrant traditions of Madeira.

The initiative underscores the commitment of the regional government to safeguard the material and immaterial cultural heritage of Madeira by fostering a deeper appreciation for traditional crafts and ensuring their continuation for future generations.
