Madeira's Public Transport System Adopts Three-Digit Route Numbers
Madeira GuideIn a bid to streamline public transport operations, Madeira's bus routes will now feature three-digit numbers, eliminating confusion among travelers and modernizing services.
Madeira's public transport system is undergoing a significant transformation as all bus routes on the island will now be identified by unique three-digit numbers. This change, part of the SIGA network unification process, aims to prevent the duplication of route numbers across different operators, thus simplifying travel for both locals and tourists.
The Transportes Integrados e Intermodais da Madeira (Tiim), responsible for managing the island's transportation system, announced this initiative to modernize the regional mobility framework. The move is expected to eliminate instances where multiple operators used overlapping route numbers, which has been a source of confusion for passengers.
Previously, passengers often encountered multiple buses labeled with the same number but serving different destinations, such as the 'Route 7' which had variants operated by different companies. The new numbering system will ensure each route has a distinct identifier, making navigation and scheduling more intuitive.
Despite the changes in route numbers, Tiim has assured that there will be no alterations to the existing bus schedules or itineraries. The implementation of the new numbering system is being conducted in phases, initially visible in digital formats, such as vehicle display panels and official websites, before extending to physical signage at bus stops.
The initiative is part of a broader modernization strategy that began in July 2024, aiming to enhance the efficiency and user-friendliness of Madeira's public transport services. As the transition progresses, passengers can access the updated route information online or through informational leaflets available at sales and service points.
