The PS party proposes a groundbreaking resolution to decarbonize Madeira's ports, aiming to reduce fossil fuel dependency and modernize maritime infrastructure.

In a significant move towards sustainability, the Socialist Party (PS) has introduced a resolution in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira aimed at decarbonizing the ports of the region. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce the island's dependency on fossil fuels, particularly concerning the maritime sector, which is crucial for both local residents and the tourism industry.

Gonçalo Leite Velho, a key proponent of the project, emphasized the urgency of implementing shore power systems. These systems would allow ships to plug into the electrical grid while docked, thus minimizing the need for onboard fuel consumption. This transition is critical as the global maritime industry increasingly shifts towards eco-friendly practices.

"If Madeira does not act swiftly, it risks becoming a haven for outdated vessels," warned Velho. The call for change echoes the island's commitment to align with international environmental standards, ensuring that it remains a competitive and appealing destination for global shipping and tourism.

Madeira, known for its stunning landscapes and as a popular tourist destination, has been taking strides in environmental conservation. The proposed decarbonization of its ports is expected to bolster these efforts, reinforcing the island's image as a leader in sustainable tourism.

The proposed measures are not only environmentally beneficial but also economically strategic. By modernizing port infrastructure, Madeira aims to attract more eco-conscious travelers and shipping companies, thereby enhancing its economic resilience and sustainability.
