Madeira Legislative Assembly Considers Historic Session in Porto Santo
Madeira GuideCarlos Silva proposes unprecedented plenary session in Porto Santo to address local issues and celebrate 50 years of Madeira's autonomy.
In a move that could mark a historic first, Carlos Silva, a deputy from the JPP party, has proposed that the Madeira Legislative Assembly hold a plenary session on the island of Porto Santo. The proposal, presented today, aims to bring legislative attention to the unique issues facing Porto Santo's residents.
Silva, acknowledging the financial implications of such a meeting, argued that the benefits would justify the expenses. This initiative coincides with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Madeira's autonomy and the Portuguese Constitution. Holding the session in Porto Santo would not only highlight the island’s specific challenges but also bring the government closer to its people.
The president of the parliament, Rubina Leal, has noted the proposal and promised to consider it further. The potential session would be an opportunity to engage directly with the concerns of Porto Santo's populace, particularly as the island often faces different challenges compared to the main island of Madeira.
Porto Santo, known for its beautiful sandy beaches and tranquil environment, is the second-largest island in the Madeira archipelago. Despite its natural beauty, the island's residents have long voiced concerns over issues such as transportation links and economic opportunities. This proposed session could serve as a platform for addressing these ongoing issues.
