Over the past two decades, the financial situation of Portuguese families has evolved significantly. The shift towards diverse financial assets has marked a new era in family wealth management.

In recent years, the financial landscape of Portuguese families has undergone a significant transformation. Over the past 20 years, families have increasingly shifted from traditional savings methods towards more diversified financial assets, which include equity investments and mutual funds.

Traditionally, deposits have been the cornerstone of family savings, providing a stable and secure means of preserving wealth. However, recent trends indicate a growing inclination towards financial instruments whose values fluctuate with market dynamics. This shift indicates a broader acceptance of investment risk in exchange for potentially higher returns.

As of 2025, the net financial wealth of Portuguese families, which is the difference between their financial assets and liabilities, stood at approximately 402 billion euros. This figure highlights the increased accumulation of financial assets over debts, with loans being the primary liabilities.

The concept of net financial wealth encompasses a variety of assets such as cash, deposits, debt securities, company shares, investment fund units, insurance policies, and pension fund entitlements. On the liabilities side, loans represent the most significant commitment.

This evolution in family finance underscores a growing complexity in managing household wealth, reflecting broader economic trends and the need for financial literacy in navigating investment markets.
