Madeira's emergency services were highly active this week, responding to a series of unique incidents involving a flying zinc roof, a goat rescue, and a pizza delivery accident.

In a series of unforeseen events, Madeira's emergency services were deployed to handle three distinct incidents over the past few days. These incidents included a flying zinc roof, a dramatic goat rescue, and a motorcycle accident involving a pizza delivery.

Zinc Roof Incident

On the evening of March 3, 2026, strong winds dislodged a zinc roof from a workshop in Palheiro Ferreiro, causing it to land precariously atop power lines near a residential area. The incident prompted a quick response from the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the situation highlighted potential risks associated with adverse weather conditions.

Goat Rescue at Ribeira Grande

Earlier the same day, emergency services were called to Ribeira Grande in Santo António, where a goat had become stranded on a steep escarpment. The rescue operation involved collaboration between the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses and the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal. The operation was successful, with the goat safely returned to its pasture, demonstrating the readiness and cooperation among Madeira's emergency teams.

Pizza Delivery Mishap

In another incident on March 1, 2026, a 19-year-old pizza delivery driver was involved in a motorcycle accident on Caminho do Desterro, Funchal. The young man suffered a fractured leg and was promptly attended to by the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses, who transported him to Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça for further treatment.

These events underscore the diverse challenges faced by emergency services on the island, ranging from natural events to everyday accidents. The swift responses to these incidents reflect the preparedness and dedication of the local emergency teams.
