Emanuel Câmara Calls for Urgent Correction of Mobility Subsidy
Madeira GuideEmanuel Câmara, a Socialist Party deputy from Madeira, urged for urgent corrections to the Mobility Subsidy, citing injustices faced by island residents. His appeal aims to remove financial burdens imposed by current policies.
In a recent session of the Infrastructure, Mobility, and Housing Commission, Emanuel Câmara, a Socialist Party deputy representing Madeira in the Portuguese Assembly, made a compelling case for urgent changes to the Subsídio Social de Mobilidade (SSM). This subsidy is designed to alleviate travel costs for residents of Portuguese islands like Madeira.
Câmara criticized the current model as being detrimental to the residents of Madeira, describing it as "an attack on both their intelligence and their wallets." He emphasized that the amendments introduced by the government are unacceptable and have created unnecessary financial burdens.
The current subsidy model requires residents to declare no outstanding debts to the state, imposes a limit of 200 euros per journey, and uses a complex electronic platform, which Câmara argues complicates rather than facilitates travel for island residents.
He warned that the existing regulations are reminiscent of past policies that stripped rights from Madeirans, urging the government to avoid being "anti-autonomist" and to consider the unique needs of the island residents.
Câmara's call for reform is not an isolated voice. He highlighted that all deputies from the Autonomous Regions, regardless of political affiliation, share the same concerns and are united in seeking better solutions for their constituents.
"Do not be anti-autonomist," Câmara urged, advocating for the rights and needs of Madeira's residents.
