In 1976, Madeira's Legislative Autonomy was a pivotal moment in regional self-governance. Commemorating its 50th anniversary, a special edition of stamps has been released.

Fifty years ago, in March 1976, the Portuguese Constituent Assembly was deliberating on a landmark document aimed at granting autonomy to the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores. This move was a significant step in acknowledging the regions' distinct identities and their right to self-governance.

The autonomy project was crafted by the 8th Commission, and its approval was seen as a reflection of the people's long-standing desire for self-determination, which had been suppressed under the Salazar dictatorship. Américo Viveiros, a deputy from the Partido Popular Democrático (PPD), highlighted that the constitutional inclusion of this autonomy was a victory for the people who had been historically marginalized.

To mark half a century since this historic development, the CTT, Portugal's postal service, has released a special edition of stamps. This commemorative issue pays homage to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, celebrating its role in the region's political evolution and its ongoing significance in local governance.

For residents and tourists alike, this anniversary is not just a reminder of the past struggles but also a celebration of Madeira's unique cultural and political identity. The stamps serve as a tangible symbol of the island's journey from a period of limited autonomy to its current status as a vibrant, self-governing region.
