Carlos Gonçalves Highlights Challenges and Achievements in Madeira's Artistic Education
Madeira GuideAmidst the celebration of 50 years of autonomy in Madeira, Carlos Gonçalves addresses both the challenges and achievements in the region's artistic education, advocating for centralized coordination while celebrating democratization.
In a significant discussion held during the congress of Artistic Education in Madeira, Carlos Gonçalves, the former president of the Conservatory – Escola Profissional das Artes da Madeira, emphasized the dual aspects of the region's artistic education system. As Madeira marks 50 years of autonomy, Gonçalves highlighted both the achievements and challenges faced in this sector.
Gonçalves criticized the current decentralized approach to the coordination of artistic education, warning that excessive autonomy granted to individual schools could undermine the coherence of the region's educational objectives. He argued for a return to a centralized structure to ensure uniformity and quality across the island's educational institutions.
Conversely, Gonçalves also celebrated the democratization of artistic education in Madeira. He recalled that in the early 1980s, music education was confined to a small number of students in Funchal. However, over the decades, this has transformed, allowing access to children across the entire island, thus broadening the reach and impact of artistic education.
This dual perspective was shared during a roundtable discussion under the theme '50 Years of Autonomy and Its Impact on Education in Madeira'. The event was part of a broader congress dedicated to evaluating and celebrating the progress in artistic education, providing a platform for stakeholders to discuss the future directions of this vital educational sector.
The excessive autonomy of schools could jeopardize the coherence of a project that was born with a regional dimension.
