The Port Authority of Funchal has cancelled the strong sea disturbance warning initially extended until January 7, 2026. This decision comes as weather conditions improve, providing relief to residents and tourists.

In a significant development for both locals and tourists on Madeira Island, the Port Authority of Funchal has retracted the strong sea disturbance warning that was previously extended until January 7, 2026. The initial warning, issued due to anticipated rough sea conditions, had been a cause of concern for those planning maritime activities.

The decision to cancel the warning was made as weather forecasts indicated an improvement in conditions. Initially, there were expectations of fresh to very fresh northeasterly winds, ranging from 31 to 50 km/h, which were set to decrease to moderate levels by the end of the warning period.

Wave heights on the northern coast were predicted to be between 3.5 and 4 meters, decreasing to 2 to 3 meters. Meanwhile, the southern coast was expected to experience wave heights of 1 to 2 meters. These conditions necessitated the initial extension of the warning.

The cancellation of the warning is welcomed by both residents and the tourism sector, as Madeira is a popular destination known for its natural beauty and maritime activities. The improved weather conditions will allow for the resumption of boat tours and other sea-related activities that are a significant part of Madeira's appeal.

For those unfamiliar with Madeira, the island is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, mild climate, and vibrant culture, making it a year-round tourist hotspot. The Port of Funchal plays a crucial role in the island's economy, facilitating both cargo and passenger vessels.
