The Juntos Pelo Povo party raises concerns about abandoned vehicles and appliances on Porto Santo, contrasting with its UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.

The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has expressed serious concerns regarding the presence of abandoned vehicles, appliances, and other debris scattered across Porto Santo. This issue was highlighted by Carlos Silva, a deputy from JPP, who emphasized that such neglect is incompatible with the island's prestigious recognition as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

In a recent statement, Silva criticized the current state of affairs, noting that the accumulation of scrap and waste tarnishes the natural beauty and ecological value that Porto Santo is known for. He underscored that the island’s inclusion in the UNESCO list in October 2020 was a source of immense pride for both Porto Santenses and Madeirans, showcasing its rich social, historical, environmental, and cultural heritage.

The deputy called on the regional government to take immediate action to address this environmental concern, which poses a threat not only to the island's image but also to its biodiversity and appeal as a tourist destination.

The issue of waste management has been a recurring topic in Madeira, with local authorities being urged to implement sustainable practices that align with international standards, particularly in regions recognized for their environmental significance.

Porto Santo, known for its stunning beaches and tranquil environment, relies heavily on tourism. The presence of waste could potentially deter tourists, impacting the local economy and undermining conservation efforts.
