The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party is pushing for transparency by requesting access to the ferry link study between Madeira and the mainland, vital for regional mobility and economic considerations.

The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has officially requested that the Portuguese Parliament be granted access to the economic-financial study concerning the potential ferry link for passengers and cargo between Madeira and mainland Portugal. This initiative, spearheaded by JPP deputy Filipe Sousa, will be voted on by the Committee on Infrastructure, Mobility, and Housing this Tuesday.

The JPP's call for transparency comes in the wake of the completion of the study by the central government on May 31. The party argues that it is unacceptable for such a significant document, which could influence future decisions regarding a long-standing demand of Madeirans and Porto-Santenses, to remain solely within the government's knowledge without public or parliamentary scrutiny.

Filipe Sousa emphasized the importance of this study, noting that Madeirans have the right to know its conclusions and the rationale behind future governmental decisions. The ferry link is seen as a critical component in enhancing territorial continuity, increasing competition in transport, and reducing the costs associated with insularity.

The JPP seeks comprehensive access not only to the economic-financial study but also to all technical, financial, and legal appendices, and any additional documentation produced during the study's execution. This move is intended to ensure full transparency and enable informed decision-making regarding this essential transportation link.

The establishment of a reliable ferry connection is a historical aspiration of the Madeira Autonomous Region. It is frequently cited as a potential avenue for boosting regional economy, providing new opportunities for families, businesses, and economic operators, and reinforcing the region's connectivity with the mainland.
