Madeira celebrates Epiphany with traditional King Cake in Câmara de Lobos, while maritime attractions like the Norwegian sail ship "Christian Radich" and cruise liners grace Funchal's port.

As the New Year unfolds, Madeira Island has been bustling with activities and attractions that cater to both residents and tourists alike. On January 9, 2026, Madeira celebrated Epiphany with its customary Bolo de Rei, or King Cake, in the picturesque town of Câmara de Lobos. This traditional cake, accompanied by chocolate cups filled with cherry liqueur, was a highlight of the celebrations, embodying the spirit of the Three Kings Day.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the port of Funchal was a sight to behold with the arrival of several maritime giants. The majestic Norwegian sail training ship, "Christian Radich," moored at the CR7 quay, was a spectacle as its crew worked high on the foremast. Built in 1937, this historic vessel shares the spotlight with cruise ships like the P&O "Azura" and "AIDAcosma," which were also docked, attracting the attention of maritime enthusiasts and tourists.

The festivities in Madeira were not only about tradition but also showcased the island's vibrant maritime culture. The sight of the MSC Musica gracefully approaching the island on December 27, 2025, marked another significant maritime event. This cruise liner, along with the New Year’s fireworks, set against the backdrop of Storm Francis, created a dramatic and memorable scene in Funchal.

For those unfamiliar with local customs, the Bolo de Rei is a traditional Portuguese cake associated with Epiphany. It is typically round with a hole in the center, filled with candied fruits and nuts. This cake is a staple during the Epiphany celebrations, symbolizing the gifts offered by the Three Wise Men.

Madeira’s celebration of Epiphany and its maritime attractions provide a unique blend of cultural tradition and modern tourism appeal, making it a must-visit destination during this festive season.
