The Regional Government of Madeira has announced a new support package to mitigate the impacts of the ongoing energy crisis. This initiative aims to protect businesses, jobs, and family purchasing power amid rising fuel prices.

The Regional Government of Madeira has launched a comprehensive support package designed to alleviate the effects of the current energy crisis on the island's economy and society. Announced on April 1, 2026, by José Manuel Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary of Economy, the package seeks to safeguard the competitiveness of businesses, preserve employment, and maintain the purchasing power of families.

The measures, set to be effective for the next three months, address the hikes in fuel prices caused by the ongoing conflict in Iran. With five main intervention areas, the package includes financial aid to crucial sectors such as transportation, fishing, firefighting services, social welfare institutions, and general consumer price stabilization.

  • 400,000 euros allocated to public passenger transport services.
  • 110,000 euros for the taxi sector, providing 135 euros per vehicle, which is 15 euros more than the mainland.
  • Increased gas cylinder subsidy from 20 to 25 euros, assisting approximately 3,300 families as part of the solidarity gas program.
  • Support for fire departments, offering 360 euros per heavy vehicle and 120 euros per light vehicle, covering 137 vehicles.
  • Up to 600 euros in subsidies for each Private Institution of Social Solidarity (IPSS).
  • A 10-cent per liter subsidy on colored diesel fuel for the fishing industry.

Additionally, the regional government assured the continuation of a 10-cent price differential in fuel costs compared to mainland Portugal, starting next Monday. This move aims to ease the economic burden on local residents and businesses.
