PS Calls for Enhanced Regulation of Local Accommodation in Funchal
Madeira GuideThe Socialist Party (PS) in Funchal is urging stronger oversight of local accommodation (AL) due to a significant number of units operating without mandatory insurance, posing risks to residents and tourists alike.
The Socialist Party (PS) in Funchal has raised concerns over the lack of regulation in the local accommodation (AL) sector, calling for enhanced oversight to ensure compliance with existing laws. This plea comes in response to findings that approximately 44% of AL units in Funchal are not adhering to the compulsory insurance requirements.
During the 'Pensar o Funchal' initiative, held by the Municipal Assembly, PS representatives highlighted the urgency of addressing these regulatory gaps. The event underscored the importance of regulating the AL sector to prevent potential negative impacts on the housing market and to maintain the quality of life in residential areas.
Sérgio Abreu, a PS deputy, emphasized that while the party supports the private initiative of local accommodations—which has played a critical role in urban revitalization and job creation—it is imperative to safeguard the interests of the local population. He warned that unregulated growth in this sector could hinder access to affordable housing and disturb the peace in residential buildings.
Funchal, being a central hub for tourism in Madeira, hosts about 42% of the island's local accommodation units, making it crucial for the city to implement effective oversight mechanisms. The municipal tourist tax derived from AL has significantly contributed to the local budget, further highlighting the sector's economic importance.
The PS has called for a timely discussion and revision of the AL regulations in the Municipal Assembly, stressing that delays in addressing these issues could lead to larger socio-economic challenges. The party's proposals aim to balance economic benefits with the community's well-being.
