Funchal's Municipal Garden Becomes a Stage for Sustainability at Theatre Festival
Madeira GuideThe Funchal Municipal Garden was transformed into a vibrant stage for the 4th Environmental Theatre Festival, showcasing innovative performances with a focus on sustainability.
On April 22, 2026, the Funchal Municipal Garden was bustling with activity as it hosted the 4th edition of the Environmental Theatre Festival, titled 'Green Attitude for a Healthy Planet'. This annual event, organized by the Funchal City Council's Environmental Awareness Unit, aims to unite various generations in a collective effort to preserve the natural heritage of Madeira.
The festival has become a signature event in the city's environmental calendar, challenging local schools and institutions to create original plays. A key requirement for participation is the reuse of materials for costumes and props, demonstrating how waste can be transformed through art.
"This festival is living proof that environmental awareness flourishes when we give a stage to our community's creativity," said Paula Jardim Duarte, Councilor for the Environment. "By seeing children and seniors united in reusing materials to tell stories about our planet, we realize that the message of sustainability is moving from concept to practice."
The intergenerational celebration featured 83 students and 16 teachers from various educational entities, including EB1/PE de São Martinho, Externato São João, and Escola Básica e Secundária Dr. Ângelo Augusto da Silva. The performances were also supported by the theater group 'O Moniz – Carlos Varela' from Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz and the Funchal Community Development Association.
The festival drew an audience of over 600 spectators, reflecting the spirit of community engagement and the island's commitment to environmental education. It serves as a reminder of the power of art in advocating for a sustainable future, highlighting the innovative ways in which Madeira's residents are taking action to protect their environment.
