Urgent Call for Revitalization of São Francisco Garden in Câmara de Lobos

In a pressing appeal, the Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) political party has called for the urgent requalification of the São Francisco Garden in Câmara de Lobos, Madeira. This picturesque garden, once a vibrant community space, is now marred by neglect and disrepair, according to JPP representatives.

Nuno Freitas, a member of the Câmara de Lobos Parish Assembly from JPP, outlined the numerous issues plaguing the garden. "The pavement is damaged, the monument to Saint Francis of Assisi is vandalized, the area is unkempt, and access to the parking facility is severely restricted," he stated.

The garden, which includes an underground parking area with a capacity for 150 vehicles, is described as an underutilized asset that could significantly benefit the local community if properly managed. However, the space remains largely closed to the public, diminishing its value to residents and tourists alike.

Freitas also highlighted the abandoned restaurant on the premises, suggesting that its redevelopment could add new amenities to the area. "It is embarrassing for Câmara de Lobos residents to see such potential wasted," he added, emphasizing the need for immediate action to restore the garden's historical and cultural significance.

The JPP has committed to advocating for the garden's redevelopment, stressing that despite bureaucratic challenges posed by the Sociedade Metropolitana de Desenvolvimento, the local community deserves to reclaim this historical site, established in the 1970s.
