Every year on July 30th, Madeira and Porto Santo celebrate World Embroidery Day. This day is central to the Madeira Embroidery Week, which emphasizes the convergence of heritage preservation, intergenerational learning, and artistic reinvention.
In Funchal, the garden of the Madeira Wine, Embroidery, and Handicraft Institute (IVBAM) on Rua Visconde Anadia becomes an interactive creative space from 10 AM to 4 PM. Here, students from the Madeira Embroidery Professional Course lead a practical workshop open to the public, offering insights into material selection and the precision of regional embroidery techniques.
A highlight of the event is the Embroidery Circle, where both locals and visitors are invited to share memories and techniques. Simultaneously, in Porto Santo, the 'Bordadeiras de Casa da Ilha Dourada' host an Embroidery Circle at Esplanada da Baiana from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. Participants receive kits to engage with this ancient craft.
Additionally, the Madeira Traditional Arts and Crafts Space on Rua dos Ferreiros offers a skill enhancement session specifically for the 'Bordadeiras de Casa da Ilha da Madeira' from 10 AM to 4:30 PM. Meanwhile, at 10:30 AM, the final guided tour of the 'Madeira Embroidery' exhibition at Centro Cultural Quinta Magnólia allows the public to delve into the historical evolution and artistic value of the showcased pieces.
