For students entering higher education in Madeira, understanding the various university scholarship options can be crucial. As the first phase of the National Access Contest to Public Higher Education approaches, it’s important for students and parents to be aware of the support available.
Applications for the first phase of the National Access Contest to Public Higher Education in Portugal will run from July 20 to August 6, 2026. Special contingents and exam replacements have until July 27 to apply. This process is conducted entirely online, giving students time to complete the school year, improve grades, and enjoy their summer holidays while planning for their academic future.
Scholarships Available to RAM Students
For students residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), there are three primary layers of support available. These include scholarships from the Republic, managed by the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES); scholarships from the Regional Government, managed by the Office for Higher Education (GES); and scholarships from municipal councils, each offering its own program. In many cases, students can combine support from all three sources.
DGES Scholarships
The scholarships offered by DGES are available to any university student in Portugal who demonstrates financial need, regardless of their origin. These are considered the "base" scholarships within the national system, covering tuition fees and potentially including accommodation and other supplements.
