Fallen Trees Cause Disruptions
On the night of March 3, 2026, firefighters from the Funchal and Machico regions were mobilized to address four separate incidents of fallen trees. In Funchal, two trees on the Estrada da Eira do Serrado required immediate attention. Meanwhile, in Machico, trees fell on the Caminho do Lameirão in Ribeira de Machico and in front of the Capela dos Milagres.
Unexpected Challenges from the Wind
Adding to the chaos, strong winds dislodged the zinc roofing of a workshop in the Palheiro Ferreiro area. The roofing landed precariously on electrical cables near a residential home. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident, but it highlighted the potential hazards posed by severe weather conditions on the island.
Road Accidents Add to the Turmoil
Traffic was also disrupted by a couple of road accidents. In the early hours of March 3, a collision between a motorcycle and a car on the via rápida near Caniço injured a 35-year-old motorcyclist. The accident temporarily closed the road, causing traffic delays.
Earlier, on March 2, another motorcycle incident occurred on Rua Bela Santiago, involving two young men, aged 17 and 20, who were both injured and transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. The younger suffered knee abrasions.
