PS-Madeira is pushing for the creation of local markets to help cherry farmers increase their profits by reducing intermediaries' role. This was announced during the Cherry Festival in Jardim da Serra.

The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-Madeira) has proposed the establishment of local markets where cherry producers can sell their goods directly to consumers. This initiative aims to cut out intermediaries and increase the profits for local farmers.

Célia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-Madeira, emphasized the importance of this proposal during her visit to the annual Cherry Festival held in Jardim da Serra, a parish renowned for its cherry production. The festival, an important event in the local calendar, draws attention to the challenges faced by cherry farmers in the region.

Pessegueiro listened to the concerns of the farmers, who currently see a significant portion of their sales profits absorbed by intermediaries. By selling directly to consumers, farmers could potentially see a greater share of the profits, which could, in turn, improve their livelihoods.

The idea of local markets is not new, but it gains renewed importance in the context of supporting local producers and ensuring that the economic benefits stay within the community. Such markets could also attract tourists, who are interested in purchasing local produce and experiencing authentic Madeiran culture.

Madeira, known for its stunning landscapes and rich agricultural heritage, sees the cultivation of cherries as an integral part of its identity. The Cherry Festival is not only a celebration of the fruit but also highlights the socio-economic issues that local farmers face.

This initiative by PS-Madeira could pave the way for similar projects in other agricultural sectors, fostering a more sustainable and equitable agricultural economy on the island.
