Discover the various university scholarship options available to Madeira students, from national and regional programs to municipal support, and how to apply.

For students from Madeira entering or already attending higher education, understanding the different types of scholarships available can be crucial. This comprehensive guide breaks down the options, making it easier for students and their families to navigate the financial support system.

Application Period and Process

The first phase for applications to the National Contest for Access to Public Higher Education runs from July 20 to August 6, 2026, with a deadline of July 27 for special contingents and exam substitutions. The process is conducted entirely online, allowing students to focus on improving their grades and planning for their future during the summer break.

Available Scholarship Options

Students from the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) have access to three levels of support: Republic scholarships managed by the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES), Regional Government scholarships managed by the Office of Higher Education (GES), and municipal scholarships, each provided by local councils. In many instances, these scholarships can be combined.

Republic Scholarships

These are available to any university student in Portugal who demonstrates financial need, regardless of whether they are from Madeira. As the foundational scholarship of the national system, it covers tuition fees and may include supplements for accommodation and other expenses.
