Madeira Island, a place known for its vibrant community and breathtaking landscapes, is in mourning as it bids farewell to four beloved residents—António Francisco de Abreu, Maria Lurdes da Corte Macedo Sousa, Manuel de Abreu Rodrigues, and Ilda das Candeias Rodrigues Serradas. These losses have left a profound impact on their families and the broader community.

A Community United in Grief

The funerals of António Francisco de Abreu and Ilda das Candeias Rodrigues Serradas were held on June 1, 2026. António, a resident of Travessa da Marinheira, Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, was remembered in a ceremony at the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça. Ilda, from Caminho dos Zimbreiros, Tabua, had her service at the church of the Santíssima Trindade.

Meanwhile, Maria Lurdes da Corte Macedo Sousa and Manuel de Abreu Rodrigues were laid to rest on May 31, 2026. Maria's service took place at the capela de Nossa Senhora da Apresentação in Ribeira Brava, while Manuel's was held at the church of São Paulo, Ribeira Brava.

Remembering Their Legacies

Each individual leaves behind a legacy of compassion and community service. The families of these individuals expressed deep gratitude for the support they received from friends, neighbors, and local healthcare providers during their times of need.

The loss of these community pillars serves as a reminder of the tight-knit nature of Madeira's various communities, where personal connections and mutual support are highly valued.

Upcoming Memorials

Memorial services will continue with the traditional 'missa de 7º dia' (seventh-day mass) held in their honor. Community members are encouraged to attend these services to pay their respects and support the grieving families.

The 'missa de 7º dia' for António Francisco de Abreu will be on June 6, at the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça. Maria Lurdes's service is scheduled for June 7 at São Bento, Ribeira Brava. Manuel de Abreu Rodrigues's memorial will also be on June 7 at São Paulo, Ribeira Brava, and Ilda's at the Santíssima Trindade in Tabua.
