In a significant move to combat smoking and enhance public health, the Municipality of Funchal organized a roundtable event on May 29, 2026, as part of the World No Tobacco Day celebrations. Held in the Municipal Assembly Hall, the event brought together health professionals, community representatives, and partner entities to discuss strategies for promoting health literacy and smoking cessation.
The event, themed 'Tobacco-Free Planet - A Challenge for All,' was inaugurated by Helena Leal, the councilor responsible for health. Leal emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in health promotion, involving institutions, schools, families, and the community at large to tackle the persistent public health challenge posed by smoking.
Leal highlighted the ongoing threat of tobacco use, which is linked to numerous respiratory, cardiovascular, and oncological diseases. She stressed the need for early health education, equipping young people with credible information and critical thinking skills to make healthier lifestyle choices.
The event also addressed the World Health Organization's theme for the year, 'Unmasking the Appeal - Combating Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.' Leal called attention to the strategies employed to attract young consumers and underscored the importance of continued efforts to inform, sensitize, and support those looking to quit smoking.
This initiative reflects Funchal's commitment to reducing tobacco consumption and fostering a healthier community through education and prevention, aligning with global health standards.
"Preventing tobacco use is one of the most effective tools to curb consumption and avoid new dependencies," stated Helena Leal.
