A series of unfortunate incidents in Madeira, involving road accidents and a massive landslide, have disrupted daily life, affecting both locals and tourists.

Madeira Island faced a string of disruptive events on May 6, 2026, significantly impacting both residents and tourists. Emergencies ranged from traffic accidents in Funchal to a major landslide in Machico.

Traffic Incidents in Funchal

In Funchal, emergency services were called to Rua Dr. Pita following a collision between a car and a motorcycle. A 28-year-old man was injured in the incident, sustaining abrasions to his knee and elbow. He was promptly taken to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for treatment.

Earlier, another traffic accident occurred on Estrada da Eira do Serrado involving two cars. A young woman, also 28, suffered a head injury after hitting the front seat during the crash. She was also transported to the same hospital for medical attention.

Landslide in Machico

A significant landslide disrupted the regional road between Portela and Porto da Cruz in Machico. This natural disaster required the intervention of Machico's municipal firefighters and the regional roads authority, indicating the severity of the situation.

Motorcycle Accident Near Capela do Amparo

On May 5, a separate incident involved a Venezuelan food delivery motorcyclist who crashed near Capela do Amparo. The rider, aged 39, suffered a wrist injury and was taken to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital.

These events highlight the vulnerability of Madeira's infrastructure and the challenges faced by emergency services in managing multiple incidents.
