Madeira Island bids farewell to four cherished residents who recently passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love and community spirit. Their funerals will be held across different parishes, inviting locals and friends to pay their respects.

Madeira Island is mourning the loss of four beloved residents: Maria Freitas de Ponte, Maria Marlene Correia de Freitas, Jorge Armindo da Luz, and Manuel Estêvão Fernandes. Each of these individuals played a significant role in their communities, touching the lives of those around them.

Maria Freitas de Ponte, a long-time resident of Estrada Simão Gonçalves da Câmara in Calheta, passed away on March 8, 2026. Her funeral is scheduled for the same day, beginning at the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça and proceeding to the São Francisco Xavier Church in Calheta. The ceremony will continue at the Lombo do Salão cemetery.

Maria Marlene Correia de Freitas, who lived in Santa Cruz, passed away on March 7, 2026. Her funeral will be held on March 8, starting from the Casa Mortuária da Agência Funerária in Santa Cruz and moving to the Igreja Matriz. An autobus service will be available for those wishing to accompany the procession.

Jorge Armindo da Luz, from Rua Quinta da Aragem in Funchal, died on March 7, 2026. His funeral will take place on March 8 at the Nossa Senhora das Angústias cemetery in São Martinho, where a cremation ceremony will be held.

Manuel Estêvão Fernandes, a resident of Curral das Freiras, passed away on March 6, 2026. His funeral is set for March 7, beginning at the Hospital Dr. João Almada and proceeding to the Nossa Senhora do Livramento Church. Transportation will be provided from Lombo Chão and Pico Furão for attendees.

The families of the deceased express their gratitude for the support and condolences from friends and the community. Each funeral will be followed by a 'missa de 7º dia' (seventh-day mass), a traditional service held a week after the burial, allowing continued remembrance and reflection.

Madeira has a close-knit community, and these losses touch many. The island's traditions emphasize honoring the deceased with respect and dignity, reflecting the deep cultural values embedded in Madeiran society.
