PS Proposes Grazing as a Fire Prevention Measure in Madeira

In a bid to enhance fire prevention strategies, the Socialist Party (PS) of Madeira has introduced a proposal in the Regional Legislative Assembly to modify the Silvopastoral Regime. This initiative is in line with the Integrated Management System of Rural Fires, which was recently approved.
The proposal primarily focuses on utilizing grazing as a complementary method for land management and safety. It aims to address the issues of field abandonment and the proliferation of invasive species, both of which significantly increase the risk of fires.
According to PS representatives, the current territorial management model adopted by the Regional Government lacks resilience against changing climatic patterns, exacerbated by accumulating combustible biomass and the spread of invasive species.
Deputy Sílvia Silva highlighted a recent urban fire in Santo António as evidence of the vulnerabilities in Madeira's fire prevention and response strategies. She criticized the government's claims of preparedness, pointing out deficiencies in prevention, fuel management, and territorial planning.
PS advocates for grazing as a preventive measure, citing its low cost and proven effectiveness globally. They argue that, despite technological advancements in firefighting, prevention through grazing is essential for effective land management.
The government promises advanced technology and increased resources, but fails in fundamental prevention and planning measures.
