PS Calls for Enhanced Oversight of Local Accommodation in Funchal
Madeira GuideThe Socialist Party in Funchal demands increased regulation of Local Accommodation, citing irregularities and the need for better housing access.
The Socialist Party (PS) in the Municipal Assembly of Funchal has raised concerns over the regulation of Local Accommodation (AL) in the city. During the 'Pensar o Funchal' initiative, the PS highlighted the necessity for the local government to strengthen its oversight on the AL sector.
A significant portion, approximately 44%, of local accommodations are reportedly non-compliant, lacking mandatory insurance. This situation has prompted the PS to call for immediate action to ensure compliance and protect residents' interests.
Sérgio Abreu, a PS deputy, emphasized that while the party supports private initiatives in local accommodation, it is crucial to regulate the sector to prevent negative impacts on housing availability and community peace.
Local Accommodation in Funchal accounts for about 42% of all such units in Madeira, making it a major economic contributor. The municipal tourism tax from AL has notably boosted local budgets. However, the PS warns that without proper regulation, the sector could burden residents and disrupt collective housing environments.
The PS's call for regulation is not new, but they insist that the ongoing delay in addressing these issues is concerning. The Municipal Assembly is expected to discuss the AL regulation soon, but the PS urges immediate action to safeguard community interests.
Understanding Local Accommodation (AL) is vital. It refers to short-term rental accommodations, a significant part of Madeira's tourism infrastructure. The debate around AL reflects broader concerns about urban housing and tourism's impact on local communities.
