Navio-Escola Sagres Makes a Historic Visit to New Bedford

The Navio-Escola Sagres, a renowned Portuguese naval training ship, made its much-anticipated arrival at the port of New Bedford, USA, amidst a celebratory atmosphere. This historic visit was marked by the enthusiastic participation of the local Portuguese community, particularly the Madeiran expatriates who hold a deep connection with their homeland.

Around 200 members of the community gathered at the port, waving Portuguese flags and expressing their pride as they watched the Sagres, adorned with a large Portuguese flag on its mast, glide into the harbor. The event was celebrated with traditional Portuguese music and a performance by the new folk group of the Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento.

Following its arrival, the commander of the Sagres, José Luís de Sousa, along with several officers, was warmly received at the Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento. This club, situated in New Bedford, serves as a cultural hub for Madeiran immigrants and is home to the Museum of Madeiran Heritage.

The club's president, Timóteo Rodrigues, and other members of the board hosted the Sagres' crew and guided them through a tour of the museum. This visit further strengthened the bond between the ship's crew and the Madeiran community in New Bedford.
