Madeira's PS Advocates for Enhanced Rural Public Transport
Madeira GuideThe PS-Madeira is calling for improved public transportation in Madeira’s rural areas to address accessibility issues and promote sustainable commuting.
The President of PS-Madeira, Célia Pessegueiro, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced public transportation services in the rural areas of Madeira. During a press conference held in Estrela da Calheta on April 10, 2026, Pessegueiro highlighted the growing concerns among residents about the limited availability of public transport options.
Célia Pessegueiro pointed out that the current public transportation system is inadequate, particularly in municipalities like Calheta, Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, and the northern coastal regions. These areas suffer from insufficient transport services, leaving many residents without reliable means to commute for work or access services.
The socialist leader stressed that the availability and regularity of public transport are crucial, especially as fuel prices continue to rise and parking becomes increasingly scarce. This situation has compelled PS-Madeira to demand smaller, more agile vehicles that can navigate the narrower roads prevalent in rural areas.
Pessegueiro reminded that under the SIGA network agreement, local municipalities had entrusted the regional government with the responsibility of improving inter-municipal transport routes. However, she noted that the anticipated enhancements have yet to materialize, leading to heightened frustration among residents.
"It is essential to provide a reliable public transport solution for the people of these rural municipalities," said Pessegueiro, "ensuring they can travel comfortably and affordably."
