In a pioneering effort to combat sexual violence, the SUN Project, also known as Stand Up Now against Sexual Violence, has launched a clinical trial across four schools in the Porto and Aveiro districts of Portugal. Over ten sessions, more than 200 adolescents have been trained to identify risk situations, debunk myths about sexual violence, and safely intervene as witnesses.
The program, developed by researchers from the Universities of Porto, Coimbra, and Aveiro, is hailed as the first primary prevention initiative targeting sexual violence specifically designed for adolescents in Portuguese schools. The core aim is not to label youths as potential aggressors or victims but to highlight that everyone can contribute to prevention efforts.
Understanding Bystander Intervention
A key component of the SUN Project is teaching adolescents about 'bystander intervention'. The term 'bystander' refers to individuals who witness or become aware of a risky situation. The program empowers these young individuals to not remain passive. They are trained to recognize inappropriate behaviors and understand when and how they can act without jeopardizing their own safety.
