Madeira Implements Funeral Subsidy for Minors and Disabled Persons
Madeira GuideIn a significant step towards social justice, Madeira announces the implementation of a funeral subsidy for minors and disabled individuals. This initiative addresses the financial burdens faced by families during times of loss.
In a move praised by the CDS-PP Madeira, the Regional Government has approved the application of a funeral subsidy for minors and individuals with disabilities. This subsidy is specifically designed for those who have not contributed to Social Security due to their circumstances.
The subsidy aims to alleviate the financial burden on families who have lost children or relatives with a disability of over 60%. Previously, these families faced the dual hardship of mourning their loss while shouldering funeral expenses without state assistance.
Background and Legislative Process
The initiative was spearheaded by the CDS-PP Madeira, which introduced a proposal to the Legislative Assembly. The proposal sought to amend the existing Decree-Law No. 176/2003 to establish a strengthened regime for funeral subsidies. Although initially intended to be presented to the Assembly of the Republic, the proposal was withdrawn following the Government's decision to implement the subsidy regionally.
This decision reflects a response to advocacy from the Juventude Popular da Madeira, who highlighted the injustice faced by affected families. The Regional Government's approval ensures that the subsidy will be available without the need for national legislative changes.
Impact on Local Communities
By providing financial support at a time of personal loss, this subsidy is expected to significantly impact local communities positively. It acknowledges the unique challenges faced by families of minors and disabled individuals, offering them a measure of relief during difficult times.
The funeral subsidy for minors has been increased to 1,611 euros, ensuring that families receive adequate support to cover necessary expenses.
"It was a grave injustice for grieving parents to bear the full cost of a funeral," said Sara Madalena, a CDS-PP deputy.
